If you’re searching for a new mattress then the chances are that you’ve come across memory foam mattresses. Some people love them, and some people hate them, but there’s no denying that there’s a host of benefits of having one. So, just what can you expect from a memory foam mattress? Here is a quick guide to the varying pros and cons of buying a memory foam mattress for your home.

The Pros.
Everyone likes good news, so let’s start with the pros – just what makes memory foam so good?

1 – It allows for even weight distribution. This is perfect for those of you that have to sleep with partners who shuffle relentlessly during the night or if you end up “rolling together” with your partner in the middle of the bed. The mattress only reacts to where you are, adapting to your body heat, so you won’t end up being annoyed by your partner.

2 – It’s heat reactive. So, this means that it reacts to the position in which you are sleeping. This, in turn, means that rather than you being pushed against the mattress, creating uncomfortable pressure points, you actually sink into the mattress, creating a cocoon around your body and, more importantly, around your joints. Memory foam is great for people who suffer from nightly aches and pains and will support your joints while you sleep.

3- It’s hypo allergenic and anti microbial. This is great for those that suffer from allergies or have very sensitive skin. One of the most common allergies is actually to dust mites. Because of memory foam’s structure, dust mites find it very hard to survive in its environment, thus reducing the chances of being affected by them.

The Cons.
Now for the bad news, but is there anything that’s really bad about memory foam?

1 – They can be costly. Memory foam mattresses do tend to cost more than more traditional types of mattresses but they do have longevity and will last for a long time.

2 – They smell funny. Around 20% of memory foam mattress owners report a chemical based smell when they first unwrap their mattress. This is easily combated however, by leaving it to air for a few hours, after which the smell will disappear.
3- It’s like sleeping in quicksand. Some owners report that they find it hard to move around from one position to another during the night. This is because memory foam reacts to heat, but it isn’t instantly conforming, which means that is can take a while for the mattress to catch up to your body’s position.
4- Lack of edge support. Unlike traditional mattresses, there is no additional support at the edge of the mattress. This means that if you sit or lie at the edge of the bed there is no support, which has been reported as a problem for some users.
